How to Start Your Car With Jumper Cables

Oh, no! The car won't start and you need to be somewhere fast too! If you have access to jumper cables and a vehicle with a good battery, your delay may not be that long. Here is what you can do.

  1. Park the front of the car with the good battery as close to the front of your car as possible.
  2. Open the hoods on both vehicles and identify the negative and positive battery posts on each vehicle.
  3. Make sure both vehicle's ignition switches are turned off.
  4. Attach the negative and positive clamps on one end of the jumper cables to the corresponding negative and positive posts on the dead battery.
  5. Attach the other positive clamp to the positive post on the good battery and the negative clamp to the negative battery post.
  6. Start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery and wait a couple of minutes before attempting to start the car with the dead battery.

It may take two or three tries to get it going, but if the battery still has some life in it, you should be able to get back to what you were doing soon enough.
